Leadership and Empathy: Be a Buddy, Not a Scrooge

In leadership, empathy is one of the most powerful tools we can harness. Take Buddy the Elf, for instance. Throughout Elf, his kindness and empathy help him connect with everyone around him. Whether it's helping a colleague or spreading holiday cheer, Buddy makes people feel valued, seen, and heard. That’s what great leaders do—they build connections by understanding and supporting those they lead.

On the flip side, consider Ebenezer Scrooge before his transformation in A Christmas Carol. Scrooge’s fixed mindset caused him to see people as a means to an end. His world revolved around his own success, wealth, and comfort. Leaders who adopt this approach risk creating disconnected and unmotivated teams.

But the beauty of Scrooge’s story is that it’s one of transformation through self-awareness. After reflecting on the impact of his behavior, he begins to see the world—and the people in it—differently. His reality didn’t change, but the way he viewed it did. This is a powerful reminder for leaders: when we take the time to understand the perspectives of those around us, we open ourselves up to a new reality that fosters growth, collaboration, and trust.

In today’s fast-paced business world, empathy is not a luxury—it’s essential. Leaders who take the time to listen, understand, and care for their teams build stronger, more resilient organizations. Let’s all aim to be a bit more like Buddy—and a lot less like the old Scrooge!
