Mindset Matters: Turning 'Have to' into 'Get to' with Attitude and Effort

We know that when all is said and done we really only have control over two things: our attitude and our effort. Attitude is the set of lenses through which we view our circumstances. Our mindset, though, is the mental framework that gives shape to our thoughts and beliefs. Both are deeply connected together. That connection forms the basis for how we perceive the world around us.

When challenges come, a positive attitude helps us to see past the obstacles of the moment. A growth mindset allows us to analyze the situation to identify root causes and potential systemic solutions. Added together, and both become a powerful motivator for directing the will.

Our personal desires and the ability to choose are powerful motivators. That power to choose is often the difference between the “have to” and the “get to.”

But attitude and mindset alone can’t get us where we want to go. Good intentions mean nothing. There is no meaningful change without effortful action. And action requires focused effort. The move from zero to hero starts with skillful effort.

Success isn’t philosophical. There is a tactical side as well. That is why mindset is so important. Having a growth mindset and a positive disposition are not the same thing. When challenges come, it is the mind that is set on growth that will be motivated to seek out the skill improvement necessary to succeed. That is the kind of mind that is hungry to explore and improve.

Typically, our attitudes and efforts fall into one of four categories where the two collide. It looks like this:

  1. Not Willing and Not Able: Sometimes we lack both the ability and the desire to understand the essential. We neither get it nor want to get it.

  2. Not Willing, But Able: Sometimes we have the ability to understand the things that are important but we disagree with it and are unwilling to move in that direction.

  3. Willing, But Not Able: Sometimes we simply may not grasp the concept right away but understand the "why" and are eager to learn. With intentional focus, we can significantly improve our abilities and become strong allies to others on our team.

  4. Willing and Able: Sometimes we get to be the ideal, cooperative member of our team—hungry, humble, and relationally smart. With our mind set on growth and expansion, we are prepared with the skills necessary to move from intent to action. We know we can’t do it alone, and we are motivated to team up with others that can help us stay in the game when times get tough. They get going to get better!

So, think with me for a moment:

  • When it comes to team initiatives, how would you want your team members to describe you?

  • If asked, how would they actually describe your attitude and effort in those areas?

  • What behavior choices can you make to move from the quadrant you are to where you want to be?

Success is a blend of attitude and effort, where a growth mindset turns obstacles into opportunities and focused action leads the way. Keep your lens positive and your mindset hungry! Your teams are counting on you!
