The Soil of Adversity
Obstacles are interesting. And much of it depends on our perspective.
Human nature and our own cognitive biases impact the way we see the world around us. That often includes how we perceive challenges when they arise. We tend to go on autopilot, viewing inevitable obstacles as an impediment to forward movement.
However, there is always another perspective. Marcus Aurelius once said, "The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." (from Aurelius’ Meditations 2.0)
Action begins when we learn to think differently about the challenge we see in front of us. Seen from another angle, every obstacle we come across in life has the potential to help us grow. And when we begin to frame those impediments differently, it can become a call to action. Rather than blocking forward movement, it instead becomes a bridge to it.
Friend, it could be that the challenge you see in front of you could use a refreshed perspective. Don’t wish for it to go away. Wishing accomplishes nothing. Instead, work to see that obstacle as a bridge rather than an obstruction. Remember, challenges as well as blessings are part of the soil in which we are called to “bloom.”
Think for a moment:
What is the thing you are dealing with right now that has you all bent out of shape?
How can you reframe that obstacle as a bridge rather than an impediment?
How can that challenge be used for good?
What personal or professional growth opportunities exist as a result of that obstacle?
Remember, we don’t feel our way into action. If we want to change our perspectives, we have to begin with action first. That means first choosing to see obstacles differently. What seems like it is getting in the way is often the answer to the way itself!
